LA CONSTITUTION---------------------------------------------------
The Storming of the Bastille
Give us the gunpowder!
Because of the financial crisis, the King called a meeting of the estates general in 1789 to vote by order. It was the first meeting called since 1614. The government was in a financial crisis because of the debt they were in after helping the Americans with their revolution. However, the Third Estate didn't like how their opinion was considered as equal to the other estates because of the huge population difference.
The March On The Versailles
Lower the price of bread!!
The people of the Third Estate decided to meet on their own and invited members of some other Estates to join them. The Third Estate declared itself as the National Assembly, intending to begin to make their own laws and run the country. The members pledged to keep meeting until the King recognized them as an official government body. They created the Constitution of 1791 to define the limits of power for the new government.
The Reign Of Terror
OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!
On July 14 of 1789, French citizens stormed the Bastille. The Bastille was a fortress that the king used as a prison. The citizens raided the stores of gunpowder inside and had to fight for it along the way. At some point, some guards even joined their side. The military leader, Governor de Launay had to surrender the Bastille to the revolutionaries.
The Rise Of Napoleon
Liberté, ordre public!
When the prices of bread, their families' only source of food went up, women started a march, demanding for a fair price. Lots of women joined along the way, soon having thousands of marchers. They got to the king's palace and he promised to provide them food from his stores. Some went home after this but others continued protesting and were able to get into the palace, fighting broke out until peace was restored again by Lafayette, the leader of the national guard.
In order to preserve the revolution, Robespierre decided to lead the Jacobins in keeping everyone in line with the rules. However, he governed over them with much violence. If people were charged with treason, they would be beheaded by the guillotine in public. Over 20,000 lives were taken away because of this. Many more died in prison or were beaten to death.
Napoleon was a French military leader and emperor. During the French Revolution, he quickly rose through the ranks and brought much military success to his nation. He made much of the reforms of the revolution such as banking and education. He hated the terror and chaos. He stood for liberty and promised to free the people of France and provide them with justice.
