Reasons for leaving Great Britain- Included escaping religious persecution, wanting a fresh start, and hoping for a chance to own land.
This scene depicts new colonists fresh off the boat from Great Britain.
Oh dear me, how excited I am to have a new chance at life in America!
Here, with a fresh start in America, maybe I will finally own my very own land!
I am beyond thrilled to no long have worry of the looming threat of religious persecution.
While the colonies elected assemblies that made laws, only free, white, land-owning men had the privilege of voting.
We are the elected assembly! We get to make decisions about the colonies.
Well, that's just too bad, I am the governor elected by the King, I get final say!
Government in the colonies
Across the Atlantic Ocean, in Great Britain:
Back in the USA...
This war defending the colonies sure did cost a bloody lot of money... they ought to help repay our debts. Hmmm... I know! I'll place taxes on them!
How could our king do this to us? We don't even get representation in parliament to have a say in where our precious money goes!
The Stamp Act- Passed in 1765, colonists tolerated paying taxes to assemblies, because they had a say in what their taxes went to.
This is tyranny, the king can't tax each paper good!
