  • Before the 1860's, there was no railway that ran across all of North America, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The only way was by wagon which was harsh and dangerous. The pacific railroad act was passed which allowed the railroad to be built.

  • Theodore Judah's dream was to unite East and West with an iron trail. he explored the Sierras for years until he found the best route across.

  • The central pacific could not find enough laborers andCrocker convinced James Strobridge to hire fifty Chinese laborers and see how they would work. The white men working did not believe the Chinese workers were strong enough and they resented them. Chinese were given dangerous and lower paying task.
  • The goal was for the Central Pacific to beat the union pacific's record of laying 7 miles of track in one day, they were determined to lay ten. They laid around two rails every twenty seconds and the crew loaded. "Fishplate men" tightened the nuts onto the bolts with wrenches. Supply trans constantly came back and fourth.
  • Everyone was so excited when the final count of the railhead was ten miles, The union pacific's record had been destroyed! They eight track layers were considered heroes. Chinese workers had proven themselves and celebration began. David Hewes was so exited that he decided to give a golden spike to be used on the last rail.
