  • Starting Population
  • Variation
  • Change to Environment
  • Elephants live in savannas located in Africa. There are two types of elephants one with smaller ears and one with larger ears which is genetic variation. The two types of elephants' populations, even though they have different sizes of ears, are similar.
  • New Competition
  • The two elephant types create an abundant amount of offspring. In the environment, both elephants with large ears and small ears live.
  • Differential Survival
  • The elephants are not all the same. One type has larger ears and one type has smaller ears. Over time, the heat from the sun causes the temperature to rise. Both types of elephants try and stay cool from the sun.
  • Adaptation
  • The elephants with larger ears can cool down better as their large ears help them to cool down. The elephants with smaller ears have a hard time cooling down from the heat that is new to the environment. Both types of elephants try and stay cool to survive.
  • Due to this change in environment, the elephants with smaller ears have a harder time surviving than elephants with larger ears. Elephants with larger ears are able to reproduce and survive better than elephants with smaller ears.

  • Generations pass and it is shown that the elephants with larger ears can survive better. The new generations slowly adapt to having larger ears which helps them survive better. This will let the population of elephants with larger elephants to drastically increase.
