- ORIGINAL ENCOUNTER
- Good day Mark, how are you today?
- I see. That's good. What brings you here to see me? In what way may I help you?
- I need help to get approved for surgery.
- I'm fine.
- EMERGING IDENTITIES
- I understand that mark. This change does not stop after the surgery but goes on, you are not just changing your diet but also your lifestyle.
- I have always been bullied about my weight and despite that I only feel comforted by food too. But now I want to live my life and go on rides I am unable to ride now for being overweight.
- Mark is a 28-year-old male browsing online to get to know a psychologist suggested to him by a friend who could he could talk to to help him push through despite the struggle he is currently facing.
- EMPATHY
- I have never felt so good in my life. My diet and exercise routine is going so well, I no longer have trouble sleeping at night too. I feel so close to fulfilling my dreams. In all my 35 years I never thought a day when I could run around and play with my child without having to cause dillemma to my family when I start hyperventilating would come. My relationship with food has never been healthier.
- Mark and Dr. Espina meet a week after the former set up an appointment. Mark is awkward and wants to go home, while Dr. Espina is polite and tries to engage him with small talk.
- SYMPATHY
- You are right in front of your goal mark. Only a few days and your new life will start, and you will be able to make memories with your children, of you chasing them around for hours, of you travelling with your family at ease. You will finally live the life you have worked so hard for this past few weeks, and you will make it through.
- The surgery has been postponed to next week Monday... I feel anxious about how long the wait seems.
- Mark shows up to every session and over time has gotten comfortable enough to share some of his thoughts and fears.
- RAPPORT
- Good day, Dr. Espina. I am 2 weeks in the post-surgery program the hospital has assigned me too. I would like to extend to you my thanks for your patience during our first meeting, for listening intently, and for assuring/advising me on matters that bothered me before. My family and I are about to start our new adventure and we are moving out to another state, making this my last session with you. I first came here with a heavy heart and now I leave it ith a satisifed soul. My journey is still ongoing but goodbye for now.
- Mark is now comfortable with Dr. Espina and voluntarily shares the progress he makes in terms of his diet and exercise.

- Dr. Espina assures Mark that the surgery will go well and advises him to continue his visits as soon as he is able after the surgery.
- Mark has gone back 2 weeks after surgery to give an update on his well-being to Dr. Espina for the last time.
