”You live there ? There ... The way she said it made me feel like nothing.”(Cisneros 5) Esperanza didn't like her beat-up, old house that she feels isn't home. She wants a new house that she would be proud of, not one that is frowned upon.

“I would like to baptize myself under a new name, a name more like the real me,the one nobody sees.”(Cisneros 10) Esperanza doesn't like her name because it means unpleasant things in Spanish. Here, she feels horrible about her name and how other people pronounce it as if it hurts.

“If i give you a dollar will you kiss me? How about a dollar. I give you a dollar, and he looks in his pocket for wrinkled money … We are tired of being beautiful. Lucy hides the lemon shoes and the red shoes”(Cisneros 42) This vignette is where Esperanza wanted to feel grown up with the heels and she realized that it was actually scary to be in that situation that she wasn't ready for yet. Esperanza was young and getting innapropiate attention and the deli guy tried to warn Esperanza but she didn't listen.
