  • This scene shows the socs jumping Ponyboy. This relates to violence because they are hurting him, they also have a knife. The text says "They had me down in a second. They had my arms and legs pinned, one of them was sitting on my chest with his knees on my elbows."(5) The text also says "A blade was held against my throat."(5) These things relate to violence. The knife is a symbol of violence and they are jumping him which is a violent thing to do.
  • This scene shows Johnny getting jumped. Jumping is a common form of violence throughout The OUtsiders. The text says "It wasn't that just that they had beaten him half to death- he could take that. They had scared him. "(33) When the socs jumped Johnny they beat him up really bad. Beating people up is a form of violence.
  • This scene is when the socs are threatening Pony, Johnny, and 2 bit. In this scene 2 bit pulls out his switchblade and hands Pony a broken bottle. The text says "He snatched up an empty bottle and, busted off the end, and gave it to me, then reached in his back pocket and flipped out his switchblade."(45) The switchblade and the broken bottle both symbolize violence. In this scene the socs threaten to jump them which is also violent.
  • This scene shows Johnny killing Bob Sheldon who is a soc. When socs attack Ponyboy and Johnny they start drowning Ponyboy. Johnny is being held back and when he sees the hurting Ponyboy he snaps. Johnny pulls out his switchblade and kills one of the socs. The text says "You really killed him, huh, Johnny? Yeah, his voice quavered slightly, I had to. They were drowning you, Pony."(57) Johnny killing Bob Sheldon and Ponyboy being drowned are both violent acts.
  • This scene shows the rumble. A rumble is a big fight. FIghts are violent. In the fight, Pony gets kicked in the head multiple times and ends up with a concussion. The text says "Finally he kicked me in the head so hard it stunned me, and I lay limp, trying to clear my mind and keep from blacking out."(145) The rumble itself is violent but so is kicking Pony in the head.
  • This scene shows Dally being shot to death. Dally is so worked up about Johnny's death, that he robs a store. When the police come after him he pulls out a gun and the police shoot him. The text says " He was jerked half around by the impact of the bullets, then slowly crumpled with a look of grim triumph on his face."(154) Dally being shot is violent, the gun he has and the guns that the police have are also symbols of violence.
