  • Egypt, "the gift of the Nile" is located in northern Africa. They had good crops and animals leading to increased production with then lead to a large increase in the population. Around 3100 B.C.E. a leader named Menes took control of Egypt and launched Egypt's first dynasty. In the time of Menes's ruling, priests developed their own writing called hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphic means "sacred carving."

  • The Indus Valley civilization began after 3000 B.C.E along the Indus River, where fertile soil from flooding helped farmers grow crops and build cities. Major cities like Harappa and Mohenjo-daro had planned streets, walls, and drainage systems. The civilization also traded goods such as cotton textiles and beads with other regions.
