- I guess, for my test I have to search throughout the city to find out how our environment is doing. And how we are treating our environment. Especially after that truck spill last week. I have to also find out the major environment indicators, polluters, and fixers.
- Thank you so much Ms Olson, I was enjoying my week but you had to give us this test.
- All of this metal waste will take a long time to break down in the environment because it is a persistent pollutant. Persistent pollutants such as petroleum products, pesticides and heavy metal wastes accumulate in the environment, break down very slowly, or sometimes not at all. I wonder why people litre; in the end it causes harm to our environment as a whole.
- Now lets go on to see how the lake under the bridge is doing.
- Ohh, trout and perch, what wonderful species of fish. Ms Olson told us that these species of fish are only found in good quality waters. This must mean that the water quality of this lake is about 8-10ppm.
- I guess science can teach a lot and is very useful. Thanks to Ms Olson, I can apply my classroom knowledge to the outside world. Now lets try to find species of fish in low quality waters.
- These organisms are generally referred to as biological indicators. Biological indicators usually tell us if the water quality is high, low or moderate. But Ms Olson said that we have to be very careful because organisms that are representative of poor water quality may be found in any type of water while organisms that are representative of good water quality are found only in waters of good quality.
- These fish species are called carp and they can tolerate high levels of pollution. From the types of organisms that live in certain types of quality of waters we can figure out if the water is of good quality, moderate or if it is of poor quality.
- All the dangerous chemicals have been leaked because of this truck spill. This can cause a huge impact on our ecosystem, as the chemicals from this spill can spread causing harm to other areas of our community. If this dangerous chemical finds it's way into the water sources it will contaminate the water and the organisms present in the water. This is what is called a point source. Point sources are pollutants that enter the environment from specific locations.
- This time I added fertilizer mix with more nitrogen because lately the leaves and stems of these crops were not growing as well as they should.
- Uncle Ben just finished adding fertilizer to his crops. Fertilizers are an example of a non persistence pollutant. Non-persistent pollutants are wastes that can be broken down into simple non-polluting compounds by naturally occurring chemical reactions.
