- 11 year old Nya is walking to get water. She does this twice a day. She hopes to reach a pond in a few hours. It is hot and she pricked her toe on a thorn. This hurts her foot and delays her trip.
- Rising Action
- Nya reaches water, but it is very dirty. She does not mind and drinks a lot of it everyday. Many other women and childern come to drink this dirty water as well. Nya will return to this water everyday for months.

- Nya's sister Arrik gets diarrhea from the dirty water. They must give her boiled and clean water. This is a man vs nature conflict. Nya is worried Ariek will get sick again when they live in a camp with little water. Nya is afraid Arrik will need water before it can be cleaned.

- Men arrive in a jeap to speak with Nya's leader. They think they can find water inside Nya's village. Nya has doubts because she has never seen that water.
- Nya's mother and other women women go and get rocks. Other women then smash them into gravel. Men are also clearing out the land between the trees. Nya continues to get water. She has no idea whey they are getting some much gravel.
- The men take water from the pond to power the drills. That is how they will get water. Nya thinks "You have to have water to find water." The water is dirty and they need it to find clean water.
