Dr.Sadao Hoki spent his childhood in Japan, education was his father’s chief concern. It was for this reason he was sent to USA at 22 to learn about surgery and medicine. He came back at 30, and became a famous surgeon and scientist before his father died.He wasn't sent abroad with the troops as he was perfecting a discovery which would render wounds entirely clean. There was some slight danger that the old General might need an operation for a condition, for this possibility Sadao was being kept in Japan
Despite Hana's requests, the servants refuse to wash the man or enter the room. Hana washes the man herself. Sadao decides to operate on him and asks Hana for help. The man wakes up after surgery and is comforted by Hana. The American asks what they plan to do with him, to which Sadao replies that he is unsure. Sadao instructs the 17-year-old not to tell him his name unless instructed otherwise.
Who is that ?
They discover that the man is wounded and realise that he is an American prisoner of war. Sadao packs his wound with sea moss. They then discuss putting him back in the sea. However, they decide to take him home and tell the servants that they intend to give him to the police
Sadao met Hana at an American professor's house and married her after he was sure that she was Japanese, they now have two kids.
Hana tells Sadao that the servants will refuse to stay if they hid the man any longer, they accused them of thinking like Americans. Sadao denies this and attributes his actions to his training, which does not allow him to let a man die if he can help it. He continued to check up on the man. He also wrote an unfinished report regarding the situation.
The servants left the household a few days later
One day a messenger ordered Sadao to come to the palace as the old general was in pain
Sadao explains his situation to the General, to which he replies that he understands his predicament as he had taken a degree at Princeton. He is unwilling to have Sadao arrested as he does not trust any other surgeon. He decides to send assassins in the next few days, to take care of the white man.
Over the next few days, the soldier's health greatly improved.
For the next few nights, Sadao was anxious about the assassins, however, they never came. He then decided that he could not bear the strain.
