- Out to the hoghouse, some pigs were born last night.Well, one of the pigs was a runt, its very small and weak . So your father has to do away with it. Dont yell fern ! Your father is right it would probably die anyway
- Where's papa going with that axe?I dont see why he needs an axe.You mean kill it? Just because its smaller than the others?
- Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors.The grass was wet and the earth smelled of springtime.Fern's sneakers were sopping by the time she caughtup. with her father
- Please dont kill it! , I ts Unfair. Control myself? This is a matter and life and death , and you talk about controling myself. But its unfair.

- Tears ran down her cheeks and she took hold of the axand tried to pull it out of her father's hand. A queer look came over John Arable's face. Heseemed almost ready to cry himself.
- When Mr. Arable returned to the house half anhour later, he carried a carton under his arm. Fern wasupstairs changing her sneakers. The kitchen table wasset for breakfast, and the room smelled of coffee, bacon,damp plaster, and wood smoke from the stove. "Put it on her chair!" Mrs. Arable said. Fern came slowly down the stairs. Her eyes werered from crying. As she approached her chair, thecarton wobbled, and there was a scratching noise. F emlooked at her father. Then she lifted the lid of the carton. There, inside, looking up at her, was the newbornpig. It was a white one. The morning light shonethrough its ears, turning them pink.
