When Ruth first showed up on my doorstep I could see the pain through her big tired eyes with black bags underneath. Ruth is an 11 year old girl with elfin features, a pale face, dazzling blue eyes and long black straggly hair just above her waist. Her figure is thin with her bones poking out of her fragile body. Her clothes were grubby and on the verge of falling apart. I knew this girl had been through horrors of torment and I knew I needed to help her.
Ruth was quite literally the opposite from what I thought she would be like. Her features showed a traumatised young girl desperately trying to find happiness and love, but her attitude was a stuck up moody teenage girl who’d built up a wall refusing to let anyone in. Her attitude made it difficult for me to try and help her but I knew I couldn't give up on her, as many people had in the past. I had to prove to her that she could trust me.
LEAVE ME ALONE
I spent months upon months trying to figure out this little girl and who she truly was. I was doing everything in my ability to break down this wall she had built and little by little she would start opening up more. When I thought I had finally gotten through to her, her wall would be back up and she would be back to her old ways. She would constantly disrespect me and her foster siblings, not showering or brushing her teeth, leaving poop parcels in her bedroom, binge eating when no one was around and not doing as she was told. I knew I had to break down this wall of hers and I was determined to. Little by little I helped her overcome her challenges by reassuring her that I was always here for her and I would never let her down. I also signed her up for therapy so she had someone else to talk to about the challenges she was trying to overcome.
I HATE YOU
Ruth went through a lengthy court battle to put her dad behind bars. The one person she should have been able to trust was a monster who put Ruth through hell. She stayed strong and was brave throughout the whole process. The only thing weighing Ruths and I's shoulders now was the verdict. But I reassured her whatever happened she would be fine and I would protect her at all costs. I tried distracting her by taking her shopping, buying her new things, playing board games with her so she wouldn't constantly be thinking about the verdict.
COURT
What if they think i'm lying
The long awaited news was finally in. I sat Ruth down and read out the envelope. “The jury has decided. Your father has been found guilty of all charges”. Ruth's face lit up as I read it out. We were both so glad that, that evil man would be behind bars for a very long time, unable to ever lay a finger on Ruth again. This news really made a difference in Ruth and I new deep down a huge weight had been lifted off oh her and she was finally able to start moving on in life.
Ruth wasn't able to tell me about her past due to the upcoming court case, but now that it was over she was able to open up to me about it. I was mortified when I learnt about what happened to this poor girl. She had been neglected, starved, sexually assaulted and abused. I could not imagine what she had to endure. The way she acted towards people finally made sense. Even though she had been through all of this torture, Ruth was now a completely different person thanks to all the support she had around her.
