We did it for the good of the empire.
In his speech, Brutus used a comparison between his love for Cesar and his love for the empire to defend his and the other conspirators' actions. By doing this, Brutus is trying to make his method of handling situation look logical because he was being selfless by thinking about the people. In order to convince the mob that what he did was right, he further argues that Caesar's increasing ambition would have destroyed Rome through tyranny and oppression. Therefore, the only way to avoid this was by ending Caesars life for a greater good because the people are more important.
