  • Odysseus comes up with a plan. Once the Cyclops falls asleep, he tells his men to heat up a spear with the fire, and they are going to plunge it into the Cyclops' eye. The Cyclops cries out in anguish as the hot spear bubbles in his eye, causing him to be blind.
  • Odysseus has a brilliant idea for escape. He hides under the belly of the Cyclops sheep, so that when the Cyclops lets them out, he can't see them. He lets them out without noticing. As his sheep are leaving, he comes close to catching Odysseus, but they make it out alive.
  • " 'Nohbdy will not get out alive, I swear. Oh, had you the brain and voice to tell where he may be now, dodging all my fury!' "
  • Odysseus and his men take the Cyclops' sheep and they leave. As they are on their way, though, Odysseus gets cocky, and calls out to the cyclops, revealing his true identity. The Cyclops is even angrier that he was tricked, so he prays to Poseidon for Odysseus to have a bad trip home.
  • " 'Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes' son, whose home's on Ithaca!' "
