While World War I was happening, Germany wanted Mexico to be allies with it if the United States ever happened to join World War I. Arthur Zimmermann, a German top-level civil servant, was the one who sent a telegram about this to Mexico, saying that it will receive New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona in exchange. This later backfired though, because Great Britain Intelligence intercepted the telegram and later told the United States about what was said in it.

Effect
The Zimmerman Telegram was the final reason for the United States to declare war on Germany and join the Allied Powers in World War I. Since the United States joined the World War the Allied Powers won, they wouldn’t have likely done so without it, and the war would’ve been more drawn out. When World War I was over with the Allied Powers winning that also meant that Hitler’s reign was over meaning many more Jewish people were spared.
