- Bess makes pots out of clay. She makes huge pots. The huge pots hold food. She makes tiny pots. The tiny pots hold water. Kids use them as cups. Only Bess knows how to make the pots. John wants to make pots, too.
- One day he goes to see Bess. Bess has mud all over her hands. She looks at John"I want to make pots," John says."You are too little to make pots, "Bess says. "Come back when you are a man."
- John walks home. He still wants to make pots. He knows where he can find clay. He walks there. He takes some clay home in a bag.John makes a pot. The pot is not very nice.It has a crack. It sags on one side. It will not hold water. John is not sad."That was my first pot," he says. "My next one will be better."
