During the late 17th century, French explorers, missionaries and fur traders arrived in Chicago and they interacted with the Potawatomi Native Americans.
In 1779, the first permanent settlement was built in Chicago by the Chicago River.
After the Northwest Indian War, in 1795, Americans decided to use Chicago as a US military base in the Treaty of Greenville.
In 1803, Fort Dearborn was built by the Chicago River, however, was burned dow n by Indian forces in the 1812, Battle of Fort Dearborn. Lots of the citizens were either killed or made prisoners,
In 1829, Chicago had a population of less than 100.
In the 1830s, the Yankee entrepreneurs used the area as a transportation hub.
