  • In the 18th Century, smallpox was a dangerous disease that many people caught, and 15% of all victims died. Edward Jenner was given smallpox on purpose when he was young. The idea was that young and fit people were more likely to survive it than when they are older. This was dangerous and many people died.
  • Jenner survived smallpox, but later in his life he tried to stop this practice. He noticed that girls who looked after cows didn't get smallpox. He came up with a theory that if you gave a disease from cows called cowpox, you would be protected from smallpox. People thought he was crazy and didn't believe in his theory.
  • In 1796, a milk maid called Sarah Nelmes caught smallpox. He took pus from one of her cowpox spots and but it into a cut in the arm of an 8-year-old boy. The boy caught cowpox. Later, he tried to give the boy smallpox but he did not become ill. This was the first vaccine. The word vaccine comes from the Latin word for cow- vacca.
