  • This new bill lets the people decide if there's slavery in Kansas and Nebraska.
  • If the people vote for slavery, that's their choice.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and let settlers vote on slavery through popular sovereignty. This undid the Missouri Compromise, which had kept slavery out of the area. Northerners were furious because they believed it would allow slavery to spread west.

  • Kansas turned violent when proslavery and antislavery settlers rushed in to control the vote. Towns were raided, buildings were burned, and people were killed in attacks from both sides. John Brown became one of the most famous figures in the conflict after leading a deadly raid in response to proslavery attacks. The constant fighting gave the territory the name "Bleeding Kansas."
