- Welcome to the talk show, today we will be talking about a new documentary called ' Evolution-but not as we know it' and Dr Janki will give us a sneak peek into it.
- Evolution does not mean we evolved from apes. Evolution is a long, slow process that happens through natural selection.
- What do you mean by natural selection?
- Natural selection is the most important cause of evolutionary change. It means that individuals with favourable traits survive and reproduce.
- Are elephants born without tusks a case of natural selection?
- Yes! This is a perfect example of anatomical adaptation cause by poachers. Elephants use their tusks for defence, offence and getting food.
- Their survival instinct against predators has overcome their need of the tusks resulting in nearly a 3rd of Mozambique's female elephant population to have no tusks , which is a shame.
- Other types of adaptation are the behavioural adaptation-example being the solidary nature of cheetahs and physiological adaptation such as the venom made by snakes for protection and capturing prey.
