The Pardoner gave the audience a story after taking a sip of ale. Three rioters are drinking early in the morning in a tavern in Flanders where the story is set.
Climax
Three party boys gather one morning at a pub where they witness the passing of a casket. Discovering that the body in the casket belonged to a friend who had recently been murdered by Death—a flamboyant stranger who had claimed many lives in the countryside that year—was a startling discovery.
Falling Action
The Three Rioters swear an oath of brotherhood and plan to kill Death in order to exact revenge on him for all the deaths he has caused.
Conclusion
The Rioters discovered eight bushels of gold when they arrived at the grove. They waited until after midnight to move it to one of their homes after deciding to keep it all for themselves.
A rioter is assigned to gather food and drinks. Two of the Rioters want to kill the other when he comes back so they can split the money equally. The other, anticipating taking all the riches for himself, buys a bottle of poison and uses it to poison the wine bottles belonging to his buddies.
The two rioters stab their comrade to death as he enters the grove again. They ingest the tainted wine as they sit down to eat and drink, and they pass away horribly. The story then shifts back to the Pardoner encouraging his listeners to buy pardons.
