- This poem has two stanzas, 24 verses with 9 couplets and 2 triples, scheme rhime is AAABBCCDDEEFFGGHHHIIJJKK.Kiss is symbol of the love, love is taken from him. The speaker compares the gone days as a dream (metaphor). The verse "hope has flown away" compares hope to a bird (metaphor) that flys so fast that he doesn't know when: in a night? or in a day and so fast like a vision. Everything is a dream, nothing is real.
- Take this kiss upon the brow!And, in parting from you now,Thus much let me avow —You are not wrong, who deemThat my days have been a dream;Yet if hope has flown awayIn a night, or in a day,In a vision, or in none,Is it therefore the less gone?
- The speaker uses images of shore, wave and sand. Life's events is compared to a wave that surfs and can bring torments. He can not hold and keep life or the things that he loves, as he can not hold the grains of sand, they go "through my fingers", he says. He lacks control and experiences hopelessness and dispiritedness for have lost his beloved. "O God! Can I not save one (grain of sand) from the pitiless wave?", he feels so helpless and powerless that can not save not even a grain.
- All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand — How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep,
- There are alliterations such g on "grains of the golden", consonance I on "while I weep". The repetition of a "dream within a dream" and "while I weep" make the poem more musical. "O God!" is an apostrophe. The words "O God" creates on the reader an emotional effect of despair. The poem has a depressive and pessimistic tone. The poem reminds readers of brevety of life and that we have no power on its events.
- While I weep —while I weep! O God! Can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream?
