My Understanding Of The Imperfect Tense

Storyboard Tekst

  • ¡Hola! Today I'm learning about the Imperfect tense. Would you like to hear what I've learnt so far?
  • The Imperfect tense is a tense used to communicate certain circumstances about actions occurring in the past. The first circumstance is an unknown length or duration. The second is how often the action took place.
  • We use the Imperfect tense to describe continuing, ongoing actions in the past, to indicate actions that took place on a regular basis, actions that were repeated or were habitual or customary in the past and/or to describe people or states of indefinite duration in the past
  • Like all verbs, we must conjugate the verb to match the tense. To start with, we remove the endings, -ar, -er and -ir. Then, we add the appropriate endings.
  • For -ar verbs, the endings are "-aba", "-abas", "-aba", "-ábamos", "-abais" and "-aban". For -er and -ir verbs, the endings are "-ía", "-ías", "-ía", "-íamos", "-íais" and "-ían".
  • When we are learning the Imperfect tense, there are also irregular verbs and adverbs of time that we need to learn. Like I always say, we have to practice, that way we remember it. That's all for today, until next time ¡Adios!
