Meet Charlie Gordon, aged 37. With an IQ of 68, he works at a plastic box factory as a janitor. His lack of intelligence often lands him in a spot of teasing and backhanded comments and jokes from the people around him.
CLIMAX
Charlie has been chosen to be a test subject for an intelligence enhancing surgery by two doctors. This experiment has previously been done on animals, including a mouse named Algernon. Charlie is the first human to have this experiment be done on.
FALLING ACTION
To the doctor's surprise, the experiment works! Charlie's IQ increases rapidly, and he makes quick progress with things like reading and spelling. In no time, he has become even smarter than the doctors themselves.
RESOLUTION
Unfortunately, the doctors have some upsetting news for Charlie. Algernon has become very sick and his intelligence is quickly decreasing. This worries Charlie, so he decides to do extra research on the experiment to see if the same will happen to him.
Charlie's research leads to one conclusion: that he too, will mentally regress. He freaks out about this and lashes out at the doctors in anger. During this, Algernon also dies - further angering him.
As his experiment predicted, Charlie loses all of his newly gained intelligence and regresses back to his former self. He continues to work at the plastic box factory and continues to go to school for reading and writing. He buries Algernon in his backyard, and visits him with flowers when he can.
