Comic books should be allowed in reading workshop because they explore deep thematic ideals like bravery and perseverance.
I understand how you can find themes in comic books, but they are too short to be able to explore those themes thoroughly. Comic books shouldn't be allowed in reading workshop.
Actually, I disagree because although they are not long, the visuals help to develop these themes as well. The art in the comic books is just another reason comics should be allowed in reading workshop. Comic books allow students to celebrate amazing artwork along with the story.
While I agree that the artwork is a wonderful part of the story, it takes away from students using their imaginations to produce images that go with the story. This prevents students from deeper level thinking while reading.
I believe the art can actually encourage the reader to use imagery, and it can model how to visualize when they read regular novels in the future. They can also help reluctant or struggling readers find the joy in reading.
I agree that there may be some readers who might be inspired to read through comics rather than traditional books. While I still don't encourage reading comics during reading workshop, perhaps there might be exceptions.
