Amir and Baba have fled Kabul, on their journey, they reach a checkpoint accompanied by Russian Soldiers. One of the soldiers decided he needed the woman they were with to let them pass. Baba wasn't going to allow this.

Baba is talking to General Taheri at the flee market after they settled down in America. Baba is telling the General about Amirs studies, but there is someone Amir can't seem to get out of his mind.

Since being in America, Baba has been diagnosed with cancer and does not want to undergo any treatment. His cancer couldn't keep him away from the flee market. Amir could tell that Baba was getting worse.
