- Now for today I will tell you the story of the Neogene period.
- From afar, Earth looked much as it does today when the Neogene period began. But looks are deceiving. Mountains rose, and sea levels fell. The climate cooled and dried. Species were forced to adapt or die.
- It is the time where continents collided. It is where mountains erupted. India continued to push into Asia thus resulting to Himalayan Mountain Range. Alps was raised due to Italy moved up north in Europe. Spain crashed into France, forming Pyrenees. Mountains formed in America was formed also in this period
- The temperature continued to drop. Many previously forested areas were being converted to grasslands. Grasses thrived in the cool, dry weather. However, grasses provided less nutrition than Paleogene's forest plants. It took more effort to extract the nutrients. Grasses contained chemicals that were damaging to teeth. Chewing wore down the teeth. Animals that ate grass necessitated the development of stronger teeth.
- New predators evolved in this period's grassland environments. The grazing animals could move quickly. Predators had no choice but to adapt or starve. Kelp is a type of brown algae that grows in large quantities. Kelp forests developed in cool waters where the plant could attach itself to rocks and coral. Otters and other animals have evolved to thrive in this one-of-a-kind ecosystem. Sharks evolved into new species. Charcharodon Megalodon was one of these new sharks. Megalodon was the most massive of all sharks. It eventually grew to be nearly 50 feet long!
- The Paleogene Period's cooling climate persisted into the Neogene Period. The Earth had entered an Ice Age by the end of the Pliocene Epoch. This occurred for a variety of reasons. Lower sea levels, new mountains, and shifting ocean currents all played a role. Over the polar regions, ice caps grew. They extended far beyond their current positions. Glaciers formed by melting ice caps reached as far south as Ohio in the United States. The Pleistocene Epoch was just getting started.
