- I wish I looked tough like Paul Newman
- At the begnning of the Novel, Pony is walking home alone after watching a movie starring Paul Newman. Pony gets jumped by five Socs saying "It occured to me then that they could kill me." on page 5. This shows how unexpected and rutheless Violence can be for Ponyboy and the Greasers
- I killed him...
- Johnnys getting jumped was one of the most violent actions to occur in the novel. On page 4, Pony states " I remembered Johnny- his face all cut up and bruised," And page 32 "Johnnys face was cut up and bruised and swollen, and there was a wide gash from his temple to his cheekbone."
- Right after Pony runs away from home with Johnny, 5 Socs pull up to the park out of their territory. "but the soc caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the fountain." This shows how unexpectable violence can be in Small Town Oklahoma and how rutheless violence can be.
- Bob Death was very tragic, although he had it coming as he was jumping two greasers with little to nothind to defend themselves. Bobs Death portrays violence in a karma type of way, "I killed him,' he said slowly. 'I killed that boy." Page 56 chapter 4. This shows that Johnny didn't want to kill him but he had to, to save his friend and himself.
- The rumble is one of the most vivid representations of violence in the novel, a bunch of people split up by the group they identify with fighting for themselves. The rumble is both dangerous and brutal. "Finally he kicked me in the head so hard it stunned me."
- Right after Johnny's death, Dally robs a grocery store and runs from the cops, asking for the gang to come to the Lot only to get shot by the police. The Novel states on page 154 "Dally raised the gun, and I thought: You blasted fool, they don't know you're only bluffing. And even as the Policemans guns spit fire into the night I knew thats what Dally wanted." THis shows how common violence is and how quick cops can be to react.
