Sonnet 29 Shakespeare

Storyboard Tekst

  • This is a line before the turn. However, if you read the sonnet just before the volta or turn, or this very line you would likely call the speaker a Debbie downer. This line expresses how the speaker is feeling emotionally he is so distressed that he is curing his fate not knowing if it will be good or bad. But possibly presuming the worst.
  • “And look upon myself, and curse my fate,”
  • “Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,”
  • This line is also before the turn. Most people would like to change their lives for the better. The speaker is no different he wants to be rich but with hope. Meaning he is felling hopeless or in despair and would love to have more hope like he has noticed in others. So he is not seeking physical riches but more emotional richness.
  • Most sonnets use a wording that sound alike. This one is not different it uses the ABABCDCDEFEFGG pattern as seen in line 5 with the word hope and in line 7 with the word scope. There are also a few poetic devices that are used. One is Alliteration this can be seen on line 12 with the words hymns and Heaven. While they both start with the same sound when the reader hears them together it gives them an image of peace and tranquility.
  • “Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,Haply I think on thee,--and then my state”
  • This volta is found in lines 9 through 10. This is a big turning point in the sonnet. Unlike the rest of poem, here the speaker actually appears to be happy. For the first eight lines, he expressed his feelings of hopelessness and despair. Even envious of another's life possibly. However, after expressing these emotions he began to think of "thee" which is someone the speaker is very fond of possible even loves and his mood is brightened.
  • In this line after the turn the speaker recalls happy memories of a sweet love that he once knew Even though in the beginning he said they wished the were richer in hope, the sweet love he remembers reminds him that he truly has a wealth of his own.
  • “For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings”
  • In the final line after the turn the speaker states that they wished to change their worthless opinion of themselves. This sonnet was one of love, learning to love oneself and how someone or something you love can bring you joy. This sonnet shows that even in your darkest moments love can help you find your way out.
  • “That then I scorn to change my state with kings'.”
