  • Justin, I just received a phone call from Mr. Cohen. He refuses to come back for a follow-up interview. He sounded extremely upset. He said that you kept interrupting and talking over him?
  • Oh, hi Andrea. Did I do something wrong? I felt a responsibility to ensure factual accuracy because we have so few oral histories in our archives about the Civil Rights Movement - especially from the Jewish community. I wanted to ensure everything said was as accurate as possible.

  • Did you hand in your reflexivity assignment? This was to be completed and reviewed before you began the interview process.
  • No, I thought the assignment was optional. I felt that maybe I could conduct the interview first and then reflect on areas of improvement.

  • Justin, reflection is helpful, but reflexivity asks you to look at how your background, beliefs and biases shape who you are and how you relate to others. It's an ongoing process. Can you tell me how you think your identity and role affected the way you interacted with Mr. Cohen?
  • Well, I realize that my desire for factual precision came from my training as an archivist and my awareness of gaps in the historical record. In trying to protect the accuracy of the narrative, I may have unintentionally imposed my own priorities on the narrator. There's clearly more growth ahead for me.
