- type II cells synthesize surfactant which is a mixture of phospholipids and proteins that acts to reduce surface tension in the alveoli, thereby inhibiting the collapse of the alveolar wall consequently keeping our lungs stable and working right.

Moreover, Carbon dioxide being a cellular metabolism waste is exhaled in a similar manner leaving the body via exhalation.
