The American public read in the newspaper reports of Spanish treatment of revolutionaries in Cuba and the Philippines. The United States was spread out to where many Americans had different opinions on everything as in many people in the US wanted to go to war with Spain and fight only because it gave America territory. And some people wanted Cuba to be a free independent country. The opposite of being free was others wanting Spain to control Cuba and the Philippines. all the people agreed that the commercial investments needed to be protected and safe from anything. After the ship blew up and sank certain groups of the US blamed the Spanish and annoyed them for armed revenge. Yellow journalism started chants. So the US finally started their own investigation. The US congress adopts a joint resolution for war with Spain and sends an ultimatum to the spanish government. After that the US ordered a blockade of Cuba. The effect of the blockade results in Spain declaring war on the US and congress responded on April 25 by issuing a formal declaration of war
