- Original Encounter
- Hello, Ms. Susan. I'll be your nurse starting today. I'll be assisting you with your after surgery treatments and chemotheraphy.
- Hello, I'm Susan. It's nice meeting you, Nurse Faith.
- 5 days after hospitalization and 2 days before the surgery
- Emerging Identities
- Honestly, I'm not feeling well. Aside from my emotional breakdown, I feel so sick. My breast part is causing me so much pain.
- Hello, Ms. Susan. How are you feeling, today?
- Ms. Susana consulted her doctor, Mr. Benedict with regards to the several tests she recently undergone. Dr. Benidict explained to her that she is diagnosed with stage II breaast cancer. He suggests immediate hospitalization for mastectomy surgery and chemotherapy which should be scheduled within 30-90 days. Ms. Susan who is undeniably shock and sad about the findings, adheres to the recommendation of her doctor.
- Empathy
- I know that her suffering is beyond anyone's imagination.. I know that she is draining energy physically, mentally and emotionally.. I wish I could help her ease the suffering by telling that life can still be liveable even if she will undergo mastectomy... and chemotheraphy really works most of the cases..
- This phase constitutes the first interaction process based on Travelbee's Theory. This interaction between Ms. Shin and her nurse, Ms. Faith marks their first-time meeting.
- Sympathy
- I feel like my life is at the end state already.. I feel so incomplete and ugly after the surgery and several chemotheraphy.. I think this is how my life ends...
- Personal and Emerging Identities are already visibly observable in the second phase. This phase is the beginning of relationship establishment between the nurse and patient. Both of them is able to percieve each other's uniqueness.
- Rapport
- Empathy is given to establish mutual aid process and indepth relationship. This third phase emphasizes the nurse's desire to understand the patient's current suffering however, distance and non-disclosure of feelings is applied.
- Engagement of sympathethic advise to lessen the patient's suffering is done in the fourth phase-the sympathy. The nurse wants to ease the patient's suffering by understanding the patient's situation and relating the experience of what others are also experiencing.
- Ms. Susan.. theres so much in your life that is lovable, it is not just having a well-toned body or figure. Life is full of adventure and yours is yet to come! There's a lot of organizations that are advocating to cancer patients and I could introduce you to them..We are the ones that could define our own success Ms. Shin. Giving up is not our goal here.. I will be by your side until you complete your treatment and become cancer-free..
- Everytime I look at myself in the mirror, it's like I'm seeing someone else's body and face... I don't feel wholly as a human...
- Ms. Faith introduced Ms. Shin to an organization that advocates for cancer patients and after 6 months of cancer-free diagnosis, Ms. Shin visited Ms. Faith in the hospital and thank her for meeting new friends who helped her alot in coping up self-doubt and boost her confidence in joining fashion shows sgain. Ms. Shin is currently an officer of the said organization which aims to help cancer patients meet and help people with same experience .
