- Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old who works at a plastic box company. He has an IQ of 68, and goes to a special needs class taught by Ms. Kinnian. She recommends him for an experiment by Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur to go through a procedure that will triple his IQ. They have done this procedure on a mouse named Algernon, and have Charlie race him in mazes. 
- Climax
- Charlie successfully goes through the operation. Ms. Kinnian helps him learn to read and write. Overtime it is clear that his intelligence is increasing a great ammount.
- Falling Action
- Charlie realizes that a lot of people who he thought were his friends actually just make fun of him. He intelligence continues to quickly improve. His coworkers who used to make fun of him notice this, and create a petition to get him fired. His boss shows him this and Charlie quits his job.
- Resolution
- Algernon starts to show signs of a decrease in his intelligence, so Charlie begins to do his own research on the experiment. While he is doing his research, Algernon dies and Charlie buries him in the backyard of his house. 
- Charlie concludes his research and realizes that the experiment will fail, and he will regress like Algernon. He leaves the doctors with the results of his research and begins to ghost both of them along with Ms. Kinnian. He begins showing rapid signs of regression.
- Charlie has fully regressed to his prior intelligence. He feels as if his intelligent self is a different person. He attends Ms. Kinnian's class again, forgetting that he had stopped. This caused Ms. Kinnian to cry, so Charlie decided that he would leave for New York since he doesn't want to make Ms. Kinnian feel sorry for him. He leaves his progress reports, and asks that whoever reads it leaves flowers for Algernon.
