Harami
Harami can mean bastard or illegitimate.
It is a symbol of disgrace, usually to the whole family.In Afghanistan culture, family honor is important if a child is born outside of marriage, it’s not just the child who is shamed, but the whole family is judged. Harami can also be a symbol of symbol of how other people chooses who is “worthy” or “unworthy”

Nana lashes out at Mariam for breaking the teapot and uses the word harami to remind her that she’s illegitimate and a burden.This shows how word is tied to shame and unworthiness.This is connected to her identity and becomes a symbol of it.Mariam feels ashamed, like she’s already done something wrong just by existing.

Nana gets angry at Mariam for asking Jalil to take her to the cinema and calls her a treacherous little harami. This shows how Nana uses the word to make Mariam feel bad and guilty.It reminds Mariam that she was born out of shame and doesn't deserve normal things.Mariam feels sad and confused, like wanting her father's love makes her a bad person.
