At the start of Act 1, Reverend Parris comes back from the woods after discovering his niece Abigail Williams and his daughter Betty Parris dancing with a few other Salem girls along with Tituba. He brings his passed out daughter Betty back to his house after he believes that she has been bewitched by Tituba. A short time later, Abigail Williams enters the bedroom. She tells her uncle Parris that her and the girls were only dancing in the woods and that they were just messing around. Parris then tells her what his discovery in the woods will do to his reputation once everyone else in town finds out.

In the middle of Act 1, shortly after Abigail talks with the other Salem girls and Proctor; Mr. Putnam, Mrs. Putnam, Rebecca Nurse, and Giles Corey enter the bedroom to check on Betty's current status. Shortly after, everyone begins to argue what to do about the girls being bewitched and how they should approach it. Parris tells them that Reverend Hale is on his way to Salem to check on Betty and Rebecca tells them that she doesn't have a good feeling about any of the stuff that is going on. Parris and Proctor then begin to argue about the authority of the town and how it is being run. Lastly, Proctor and Giles Corey argue with Mr. Putnam about landownership based on who owns the lumber in their current area.

At the end of Act 1, Reverend Hale arrives and starts to question Mrs. Putnam who tells him that she lost seven children during childbirth and sent her daughter with Tituba to the woods in order to get them back. Hale then questions Giles Corey who tells him that his wife Martha Corey supposedly prevented him from saying his prayers once she began reading a book in his presence. He then questions Abigail about her being present in the woods when Betty passed out and what she did with the kettle. Abigail then tells Hale that Tituba was present in the woods with the girls and she was responsible for Betty's current state. Tituba is then brought into the bedroom to be questioned by Hale in order to make her confess and give him the names of other Salem folks who are involved. Tituba begins to name a couple of people and Abigail follows suit naming several other people; Betty then wakes up and begins to join Abigail in naming a list of people who are accused of witchcraft.
