Jude first has a real interaction with Kennedy while she is trying to get into the theater, "Of course right then she bumped into Kennedy hustling toward the entrance. She wore jean shorts so short, the pocket flaps were showing, and a pair of worn cowboy boots" (217). This is the first instance in which Jude and the reader get a clear description of Kennedy as an adult in terms of clothing choices and physical characteristics. Additionally this is the first interaction between the two cousins.
It is the final night that Kennedy is performing in The Midnight Marauders and her performance is described by Jude, "That night, for the final time, she witnessed Kennedy Sanders transform under the spotlight. Kennedy strutting out for the opening number in the town square, singing her contemplative solo in the cemetery, high-kicking on the bar during the act-closing with a chorus of drunk ghosts"(Bennett 246). Kennedy although smart dropped out of college in order to pursue acting, she found it more rewarding then school and felt that she was better at it. This is a quote showing how she acts on stage and can transform herself into a completely different person. And is a example showing why Kennedy pursued acting over education.
Throughout the text Kennedy is described and acts self centered and self absorbed, but shen Jude first asked about her he said, "Barry said that Kennedy Sanders was a rich bitch. 'you know the type,' he told Jude. 'A couple of solos in the high school choir and now she thinks she's Barbra Streisand.' "(Bennett 216). It is also mentioned by several other characters that she repeatedly does things that focus all the attention in a room on herself. She is consistently late for things like preparing for a show, and does things like make arguments with directors about lines for no reason. This creates a general dislike by most people, but she does have positive effect at times when she isn't seeking negative attention. Like when she helped Jude get Reese into their hotel room after his surgery.
How does the character look?
It was two weeks after Jude mett Kennedy and this is how she described her, "She argued with the director over the delivery of lines, often it seemed, for fun. She parked her red sports car on the far side of the garage because, she claimed, it had once been keyed by a jealous understudy. She liked to invent stories about her life, as if the reality were too dull to repeat. Sometimes she revised herselt in the middle of a conversation"(Bennett 235). Jude got to know Kennedy and spent a lot of the timer wit her, helping her prepare for her performance, helping with wardrobe and makeup and getting snacks sometimes. But this quote shows the range of how she talks, making up stories and arguing for no reason, possibly for fun. Because there are no direct quotes of this happening a summary of Jude's observations was used.
What actions does the character take?
During the book one thing that Kennedy can't do is accept Jude as a member of her family/relative. After Jude tells Kennedy the truth she asks Stella if she is right, she says no and says that Jude wants something from her. When they cross paths again in a coffee shop in New York this is Kennedy's reaction, "But whe Jude pushed through the door, Kennedy heard nothing, not the bell jingling, not the street noise filtering in with the chill. For three years, she'd imagined what she might say to Jude if she ever saw her again ... If she was back in Los Angeles, she probably would have sworn at Jude"(Bennett 278). Because Jude revealed the truth about Stella and Kennedy was told she was lying she didn't trust Jude at all because she had disrupted everything that she thought she knew about her life, mother and childhood. It also disrupted her sense of self, she can't just accept the reality and continually refuses to acknowledge it.
Effect on others.
After she left Frantz Kennedy wandered around New York for a year before deciding to travel to Europe, "She carried it with her everywhere she traveled: Istanbul and Rome, Berlin where she lived for three months"(Bennett 298). She was moving all over the place for years traveling from country to country. She also was reinventing herself as she went telling different stories about her background in every new place. The last place that Kennedy stops at so for in the book is the San Fernando Valley.
