October 31, 1753, Dinwiddie sent Washington to Fort LeBoeuf, to warn the French to leave the land. The French refused and Washington retreated. Dinwiddie promoted him to colonel and sent Washington out west again to defend land that was essential for trading
Washington heard that the French were planning a counter attack, the French would send their soldiers to avenge the slaughter on Great Meadow.Washington and his men built a stockade and named it Fort Necessity, but they had to surrender.
George Washington didn’t know it at the time, but the battle at Great Meadow was known as the first battle of the French and Indian War.
