- Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn in 1924. At age three she was sent to live with her grandmother in a former British colony in the West Indies. She returned to Brooklyn at age 10 during the great depression. She went to Brooklyn college and after graduating she became a teacher at a nursery and an elementary school. Soon after she started her political career
- Shirley Chisholm became the first African American Congresswomen in the year 1968. In 1969 she became one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus, a campaign to get more education and job opportunities for minorities. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American to run for president and the second Female to run for president with a major party.
