Christopher Columbus stopped off on the Canary Island and brought with him the sugar-cane plant to the New World
In 1542, the Spanish Settlers who came to Trinidad brought with them the sugar-came plant and planted the crop for their own use such as sweeting teas and making rum.
Things changed for the Island when the Spanish settlers introduced something known as the Cedula of Population. The Cedula of Population allowed the wealthy French people who came with their African slaves come to Trinidad and get land. The more sugar and cotton plantations the French planters had meant that there would be more sugar grown in Trinidad.
In 1782, a French man by the name of St. Hilarie Begorrat was responsible for bringing a special kind of sugar-cane known as the Othatie sugar cane. Picot De la Peyrouse was also another French man who was responsible for building the First sugar mill in Trinidad in 1787.
By 1799 Trinidad was producing sugar to sell, Trinidad was now experiencing a successful sugar industry.

In the year 2003, Caroni Limited closed because of the lack of money in the distillery and the sugar industry. This and the fact that Trinidad now had a succesful oil industry which meant that since the sugar industry was not making enough money, it made more since to close the doors of the sugar industry than keep it open. Since then the sugar industry had came to an end on the island of Trinidad.
