Do you know that the number of attempts to ban school library books was 67% higher in September 2021 than September 2022?
I use No Left Turn in Education, they publish lists of books and guides to how to complain to your school board
What books have been attempted to be banned?
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Bluest Eye, All American Boys, The Hate u Give and many more.
I have read most of those books and they have helped me discover how to deal with situations I face and too learn how to empathize with others around me.
As a parent I believe that it is my decision whether or not to teach this to my kids and when.
I have seen how healthily these books have affected my students. I love to see my students connect with the characters in the books. Whether the parents like it or not the kids are gonna battle drugs and who they love and so much more. These books teach the kids how to deal with those situations in a good way.
So if these books are so good for kids then why don’t parents want their kids to read them?
I honestly don’t understand why
Kids need to be exposed to the real world, these books are the best way to prepare them for that.
I was lucky enough to read these books through school and at home. But for many kids if the books aren’t getting read at school they are not gonna feel a desire to read them at home.
