  • Boudica was the Queen of the Iceni tribe, who inhabited the region that is now Norfolk. She lived with her two daughters and her husband, King Prasutagus.
  • The Iceni were initially on good terms with the Romans who had invaded Briton in 43 AD.
  • In 60 AD Prasutagus died. He left half of his land to Boudica and half to the Roman emperor.
  • However, under Roman law, Boudica was not allowed to inherit her husband's property. When Boudica attempted to defy the Romans who had come to seize her property, she was flogged and her daughters were attacked.
  • Boudica joined forces with the neighbouring tribe of the Trinovantes.
  • Boudica and her army first attacked Camulodunum, destroying the temple of Claudius and killing everyone that lived there.
  • The Roman governor and commander of the XIV legion, Gaius Seutonius Paulinus, was in North Wales fighting the Druids when news of the rebellion reached him.
  • The Romans sent the IX legion of 4,000 men to fight the rebels but they were ambushed and only men on horses survived.
  • The rebels then attacked Londinium and Verulamium, burning the Roman cities to the ground and killing everyone in their way.
  • The rebels were finally defeated by Paulinus in 61 AD. Paulinus chose the site of battle well and even though the Romans were outnumbered, they had good weaponry and fought well.
  • Boudica was thought to have died in battle. However, the Romans say she killed herself.
