- Malta had been ruled by various rulers since long time ago. Therefore, a Maltese diet is influenced by these inhabitants. For instance, Romans left a techniques of making olive oil and culture of wine.
- During the Medieval period, members of the Order of St John brought European food culture into Malta. Interestingly, coffee culture was introduced in Malta by the Ottoman Empire!
- After Malta had independent, international food trade became popular in Malta. A Maltese diet is a combination of international and traditional diet.
