- Back in 1861 america was drawn into the war between britain and france.America started to build costal seaforces, walls being three feet thick and batteries of large caliber cannons.
- the confederate states in america in february 1861, the union garrison at fort sumter found itself at hostile territory .
- December 26 1860 the left the smaller fort of moultrie redeploying it the men across the to fort sumter. they moved smaller guns in a attempt to beef up the strength of sumters
- in march abraham lincoln became president and vowed to keep the fort resupplied and heightened the tensions between the two sides
- on april 12th 1861 the union garrison having ignored ultimatum to vacant the fort provoked the confederates to bombing it and this started the four year long american civil war
- this war eventually led to an estimated six hundred and twenty thousand americans being killed before the war ended in 1865.
