- Carlson shot candy's dog because it was old, sick, and couldn't work as a sheep dog anymore. He also killed him because he would stink up the bunk house
- Candy struggled with being lonely before he lost his dog. when his dog was killed he started struggling with depression.
- Lennie gets a puppy from slim and he began to spend everyday with the dog in the barn.
