A long time ago, the painted lady butterflies thrived in their environment, their bright colors helped them blend in on flowers, protecting them from predators. The forest itself was also filled with flowers, however nothing good can last forever...
Present Day: Due to climate change and the dry temperatures of California, natural fires are almost a constant threat for the painted lady butterfly. Their population is dwindling and they need to find a new habitat before they are wiped out.
Some of the Painted Ladies arrive in the Bolsa Chica wetland. The are few flowers, and a whole new world of predators for the painted ladies. The Painted Ladies have trouble surviving in this new habitat.
However, some of the Painted Ladies have traits that help them survive in this new climate. They are darker which helps them blend in more to this new environment, they are also better scavengers. These butterflies are able to live and reproduce, passing on their traits.
After a long time, the brightly colored painted ladies slowly disappear from the wetlands. The darkly colored butterflies continue to reproduce as they thrive in their new environment.
Not all Painted Ladies went off to the Bolsa Chica wetlands. They spread across several different environments, over time changing into their own unique species to better survive their environment. For example some painted ladies moved to suburban towns where they have plenty of food.
