In the Great Gatsby colors are shown and recognized as ambiguous motifs. Driving through the Valley of Ashes the characters pass a billboard with "the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg [they] are blue and gigantic [with] a pair of enormous yellow spectacles" (Fitzgerald 23). The color blue can symbolize sadness and dreams, while the color yellow symbolizes happiness and money. I think they represent Gods eyes and that they are judging society as a moral wasteland.
In The Great Gatsby Daisy's name is ambiguous. A daisy is a flower with white petals surrounding the yellow centering. Daisy is materialistic (yellow) on the inside but pure and innocent (white) on the outside. Daisy can be seen as materialistic or innocent. This is important because it lets readers understand that people aren't always what you might suspect.
The green light in The Great Gatsby is an ambiguous motif. Green can symbolize money, jealousy, a new start, and lastly Daisy. Gatsby "believed in the green light" (Fitzgerald 180). Gatsby stared at the green light across his house hoping he would achieve his dreams of getting Daisy eventually. The authors purpose of adding the green light was for the readers to better understand his motivation and how strong his love for Daisy was.
