Due to the huge impact sugarcane profits had on the economy, the English, French and Spanish colonies focused solely on the sugarcane crop.This resulted in an over-dependence on sugarcane production for income, a lack of diversification and an increased practice of monoculture.
Greater political power was achieved by the countries which had large financial gains from their role in the sugar trade.The British, in particular, were one of them as they introduced the Navigation Acts to end Dutch trading supremacy in the West Indies. This was done in an effort to reserve all the trade for Britain which would bring them more wealth and power. Islands were also further brought under rule of the royal government to achieve greater centralization.
