A terrible prophesy was given by an oracle that the son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta will one day kill the King, and then marry his mother the Queen.
The Queen asks her servant to take her son to the mountain and leave Oedipus for dead. Instead he is saved by a shepherd and then adopted. His new parents are King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth.
Many years later Oedipus learns of this prophesy and flees Corinth and travels to Thebes. During his journey he fights and kills King Laius, his birth father unknowingly.
Oedipus continues and meets a Sphinx where he must solve a riddle to pass on to Thebes ore else will die. Oedipus answers correctly and is allowed to pass.
Since Oedipus solved the riddle of the Sphinx, he is made the new king of Thebes to replace King Laius. He marries Queen Jocasta, his birth mother and has four children.
The truth is revealed to Oedipus and Queen Jocasta many years later that they are mother and son. Queen Jocasta kills herself and Oedipus gouges out his eyes and is exiled from Thebes.
